The pilots are not the only people in the fight.

Below the city, Eppo catches broadcasts before they become orders. He intercepts messages, decrypts the empire’s traffic and opens a path through enemy systems before the flight cells reach the lock.

He does not need to be in the cockpit to be on the run. When a hostile network turns its eyes toward the Noderunners, Eppo turns its own signal back against it.
